#SilentSunday White Kanjis and Green Peas
Is that you, Aomame?
What is she thinking, under that short hair that seems to want to move forward? What is she looking at, her eyes crinkled and crossed by the fold of the poster? Her mouth expresses so much, yet says nothing, barely opening. She doesn’t seem to have stopped in mid-stride, even though her emaciated body is tense. Her long neck is strong enough to support this almost childlike head, yet could a gust of wind break it? Was the bird resting on her collarbone before deciding to fly away? Who can say?
In an alleyway in Barcelona, at night, I spotted this poster framed in its alcove. I retraced my steps to have a closer look and try to understand its meaning. Is it art? That’s the question of the moment, and I’m trying to answer it at university this term. In any case, this illustration stimulates my curiosity and imagination.
Finally, what message hides behind the kanjis drawn in white on a pink background?
Only two are visible, and I don’t (yet) speak their language; I can only guess. For a moment I thought of Aomame, a young woman whose name means ‘green peas’, who is sensitive to the music of Janáček and a hired killer in her spare time. At least, that’s how I picture her as I read 1Q84 by Haruki Murakami.
